Chair, Corporate Practice

Chris McCall develops and implements pragmatic and efficient solutions to complex problems while helping clients achieve their business objectives and avoid unnecessary risks.

As a member of Gould & Ratner’s Corporate Practice and the first partner in the firm’s growing Denver office, Chris provides innovative and pragmatic solutions for startups, emerging growth companies, private funds, family offices, and established private businesses.

Chris counsels clients throughout their lifecycle, including on business strategy, entity selection and formation, fund and SPV formation, equity and debt financings, mergers and acquisitions, equity and incentive plans, complex commercial contracting, and intellectual property matters.

Given his substantial experience in the boardroom, in a diverse and multifaceted legal practice, and as the former Chief Legal Officer for a large, emerging growth company with significant domestic and international operations, Chris regularly serves as—and is sought after to provide—outside general counsel representation to companies on an array of issues. As a fractional or outsourced general counsel, he helps implement thoughtful and practical plans to address significant legal issues, ensuring they support—rather than hinder—growth, capital raising, partnerships, joint ventures, and liquidity events.

Chris has accomplished many notable achievements for his clients throughout his career, including:

  • Representing a wide-array of venture capital funds in leading Series A, Series B, and later-round investments, often in tight timelines and with significant legal and governance complexity.
  • Representing a leading Salesforce digital marketing agency in its sale to a global management consulting and technology firm.
  • Represented a leading manufacturer of heavy-duty transit buses in acquiring substantial assets from a Colorado-based EV company that had been placed into receivership.
  • Led the negotiation of a first-of-its-kind licensing partnership between Laws Whiskey House and the University of Colorado Athletics, establishing Laws as the Official Whiskey of CU Athletics. The deal, encompassing intellectual property, media, and hospitality elements, marks a pioneering partnership in collegiate athletics branding.
  • Led a groundbreaking licensing and technology agreement between an AI startup and the Associated Press.
  • Led an emerging growth company in securing an exclusive partnership with a multi-billion-dollar corporation to develop next-gen consumer goods and was appointed to an executive committee to oversee post-deal dispute resolution.

Chris’ background has provided him with a multifaceted skillset. He started his legal career at an international law firm in Washington, D.C., representing government contractors, technology companies, and healthcare firms in a broad array of corporate, commercial, and regulatory matters. He then moved to Denver, Colorado, where he practiced commercial litigation at a national litigation boutique and then served as the Chief Legal Officer a large emerging growth company pioneering the way in a new industry. Immediately prior to joining Gould & Ratner, Chris was a partner at a Denver-based law firm.

Chris earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, where he graduated magna cum laude.

After law school, he served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Susan G. Braden of the United States Court of Federal Claims.
