Gould & Ratner LLP is pleased to announce that James H. Abney and Rebecca K. Smart have joined the firm as associate attorneys in the firm’s Corporate Practice.

Abney, who earned his J.D. from Indiana University Maurer School of Law, handles matters relating to all aspects of corporate law and finance matters. Prior to joining Gould & Ratner, Abney was a corporate associate at a large Chicago law firm.

Smart focuses her practice on corporate and commercial transactions, including mergers and acquisitions of businesses in a variety of sizes and industries. In addition to her corporate practice, Smart also works with the tax group on M&A transaction tax matters.

After earning her J.D. from DePaul University School of Law, Smart worked at a large public accounting firm where she took part in the structuring, reporting and tax planning of mid to large scale M&A transactions for private equity groups and closely held businesses. In addition, Smart completed two externships with the Internal Revenue Service Chief Counsel’s Office.

"We are thrilled to welcome James and Becca to Gould & Ratner, where they will be great additions to our Corporate Practice. James' experience and background in corporate and finance will be of great value to our clients, and Becca's experience in transactional tax and structuring matters will provide a great resource to our M&A and transactional clients,” said Brian B. Gilbert, chair of the firm's Corporate Practice.
